STS-53 (Discovery)

 1992-086A

The STS-53 flight was the final classified DoD mission. It is thought to have carried an SDS communications satellite which relays spy satellite imagery for the NRO.

An attempt to deploy the ODERACS calibration spheres failed. On day 6, the GLO experiment studied orbiter glow. 8 cycles of the CRYOHP heat pipe experiment were carried out, exceeding planned gaols.

Salyut 2A

  1972-F04

The second DOS station, DOS 2 or 17K No. 122, was launched on 1972 Jul 30. However, the Proton-K second stage shut down early at 90 km altitude and the new space station fell into the Pacific Ocean. It would have been named Salyut-2 if successful.

STS-30 (Atlantis)

 1989-033A

STS-30R was the first Shuttle mission to launch an interplanetary probe. Atlantis took off from Kennedy Space Center on 1989 May 4. The only cargo bay payload was an IUS rocket with the Magellan Venus probe aboard. The OMS-2 burn placed Atlantis in a 28.9 degree circular orbit, a fractionally higher inclination than standard. With the deployment of Magellan 6 hours after launch, the STS-30R mission was essentially complete. The astronauts stayed in space for three more days, carrying out observations of lightning and and using the Fluids Experiment Apparatus. Landing was at Edwards on May 8.
