The BE-B (Beacon Explorer B) payload, also designated S-066A, replaced the lost S-66 mission and became Explorer XXII. It was launched at 0300:04 on 1964 Oct 10 by Scout X-4 from Vandenberg. At 0311:48 it reached a 104.82 min, 889 x 1081 km x 79.7 deg orbit. Explorer XXII transmitted until 1969 Apr 17.

Mass was 52 kg. Transit 5 type, size 0.5m dia 0.3m high and 4 solar panels 4.0m span?

Ferret 9

FTV 2703 (Mission 7160, Ferret 9) was the last Ferret to be launched into an 82 degree orbit. It was the last F-2 ferret and carried a Group 3-D digital payload which operated for 7 months. Mission was to update the Radar Order of Battle in various frequency bands, with an additional limited capability for general search. Mission 7159 was cancelled, partly because it was duplicated by P-11 flights 7311 and 7312.

An auxiliary payload, SETTER, was a followon to BIRD DOG. It uses relative phase measurements to locate S-band emitters.

Diademé 1

The 23kg D-1C geodetic satellite was launched in Feb 1967 from Algeria. (D-1B was cancelled). Like the other D-1 satellites, it was built at CNES/Bretigny, based on a structure supplied by Matra.

It carried laser reflectors and a Doppler beacon transmitter for accurate orbit determination. A magnetic stabilization system was added. The apogee was lower than planned, but the mission was otherwise successful.

Some debris objects were cataloged from the launch. 1967-11Q is probably a fragment from D-1D, not D-1C.

Discoverer 17

CORONA flight 17 (Mission 9012) was successfully launched using the Agena B on 1960 Nov 12, although Agena 1062 burned longer than expected giving a high apogee. On orbit mass was 997 kg. The SRV was successfully recovered over the Pacific; however, the camera failed to take any pictures when the film broke after only 1.7 feet of leader had been fed into the KH-2 camera system.

FR-1

The FR-1 (France 1) satellite was launched in Dec 1965 by a Scout from Vandenberg. FR-1's mission was to study propagation of VLF radio waves in the ionosphere. The 62 kg satellite was built by Nord Aviation in conjunction with CNET, the communications research agency.

The satellite was 0.69m dia and 1.32 m to the top of the mag boom, with two dipoles spanning 4.3m. A 10 kg sep mechanism remained attached to the final stage.
