STS-30 (Atlantis)

 1989-033A

STS-30R was the first Shuttle mission to launch an interplanetary probe. Atlantis took off from Kennedy Space Center on 1989 May 4. The only cargo bay payload was an IUS rocket with the Magellan Venus probe aboard. The OMS-2 burn placed Atlantis in a 28.9 degree circular orbit, a fractionally higher inclination than standard. With the deployment of Magellan 6 hours after launch, the STS-30R mission was essentially complete. The astronauts stayed in space for three more days, carrying out observations of lightning and and using the Fluids Experiment Apparatus. Landing was at Edwards on May 8.
