Mariner 9

  1971-051A

Mariner IX, the MM71-2 (Mariner 71I, Mariner I) payload, was launched at 2223 on 1971 May 30 by Atlas Centaur from Cape Kennedy in a single burn direct ascent trajectory on azimuth 92.7 deg to solar orbit. There was one course correction, on 1971 Jun 7. Mars orbit insertion was on Nov 14; planned orbit was 1200-1500 km periapsis, 12 h period, 65 deg inc.

Mariner IX mapped the planet until 1972 Apr 2. It was reactivated on 1972 Jun 4 and transmitted until 1972 Oct 27. The Mariner IX mission gave us the first detailed look at the planet Mars in its entirety.
