TDRS 5 (TDRS E) was carried into space on mission STS-43 of orbiter Atlantis. It was deployed at 2114:39 on 1991 Aug 2, and the two IUS burns were at 1991 Aug 2 2214:45 and 1991 Aug 3 0332. After checkout at 178W, it began operations as the new TDRS WEST satellite at 174W.
