STS-8 (Challenger)

 1983-089A

STS-8 was launched on 1983 Aug 30. The TDRS-B satellite was removed from the manifest some months before launch, and replaced by the PFTA and a stack of postal service first day covers. STS-8 also saw tests of the TDRS system using TDRS-1.

On Sep 1 the RMS was used to carry out tests with the Payload Flight Test Article, a large, heavy dummy satellite, as part of DTO 503 for PDRS testing. PFTA was developed by JSC. On Sep 2, the orbit was lowered for investigations of oxygen interaction effects.
