Soyuz 6

  1969-085A

Spacecraft 7K-OK 11F615 No. 14 was modified to replace the docking system with a welding experiment. The crew of No. 14 (Soyuz-6 after launch) was commander Georgiy Shonin and flight engineer Valeriy Kubasov. After orbit insertion a pressurization problem with the PAO's engines threatened the mission, but they were later manually pressurized. On Oct 12 the crew observed Soviet ballistic missile launches using the Svinets device. On Oct 16 they depressurized the BO and carried out the Vulkan welding experiment. According to Kamanin's diaries, the experiment nearly burnt a hole through the structure of the BO. The BO was repressurized and the samples were retrieved.
