Kompsat 2

KARI Arirang-2 (Kompsat-2) launch by Rokot from Plesetsk.

Multispectral imager for disaster monitoring and mapping. Based on hexagon + 2 panel Kompsat-1 bus. Mass is 765 kg including 73 kg prop capacity. Size is 2.6m high 2.0m dia 6.9m span. 1050 LT 685 km SSO.

Ayame 2

The backup ECS, ECS-b, was launched in Feb 1980 and named Ayame 2. Telemetry was lost during apogee motor firing. Its planned geostationary location had been 145 deg E.

An object was tracked as Ayame 2 from 1980 Feb 23 to 1983 in a 1443 min orbit, but is now thought to be a misidentification. G. Falworth, in his publication `Satellite News', reported that the apogee burn was on the 7th apogee at 0446 UTC (he said Feb 15, but must mean Feb 25); this would mean that the Feb 23 object can’t be Ayame 2 since the latter was still in trnasfer orbit.

A different object was tracked from 1984 to 1988, but its low initial inclination (0.02 in Feb 1984) also makes it unlikely to be Ayame 2.

In 2003 Ayame-2 was reportedly identified in a 9847 x 35473 km x 10.05 deg orbit. A second object was found in a similar orbit in 2006.

Intelsat 201

The first Hughes Intelsat II (HS-303) was launched in Oct 1966. After a successful flight to geostationary transfer orbit aboard a Delta, an underburn by the Aerojet SVM-1 apogee motor due to cold nozzle temperatures stranded Intelsat II F-1 in a low orbit. The burn lasted only 4.5s instead of the planned 17s. The satellite was used for engineering tests for several months.
