Seventeen: August 2004

 https://welib.org/md5/9becd57a174b853e66f6b2fbb031cf17

Excerpts from a cycle of Degrassi plays I wrote back in the day

Mia: I'm Mia Farrell. You see that blonde lady over there,

the one whose dress you were admiring?

Her name's Erica,she's my mother,

she had me when she was eighteen,

and my daughter Isabella was born on my fifteenth birthday:

I guess we Farrell women like to have our kids young!

I go to Degrassi, like you do: aren't you JT Yorke?

JT: Yeah,that's me,alright.

——————

Erica (cont’d):Just be home no earlier than 11,

not a minute before, and remember that

tomorrow is Saturday,so you can relax

as much as you wish to.

Mia: Thanks,Mom. You're the best

and I'll IM you plenty of pictures,

and OF COURSE I'll be on my best behavior:

I always am at these dances, you know me!

C'mon,JT,let's leave right now

and we can get there about ten minutes

ahead of the first dance.

JT:Right on,Mia,right on. Bye,Mrs Farrell,

I hope you and Izzy have a good time

without us in your way!

Erica winks JT's way. Exit Mia and JT.

Scene 15: Degrassi High school, the gymnasium and environs, evening. The 2003 Spring Formal is underway.

Enter Emma,Manny,Ellie, and Paige from one side,JT and Mia from the other.

Emma:Mia! JT! Glad you could make it!

Liberty’s over there if you want to talk to her!

My mom lent us 50 dollars to split among us,

and we can get some snacks with it.

Pretty good money, wouldn’t you guys say?

Paige:You bet,Emma. Oh,there’s Terri by the doors,

I’m going to apologize to her for the last dance,

since I did her pretty dirty that night.

Manny:Now that’s an understatement!

Exit Paige. Emma turns to Mia.

Emma:How’s Aunt Heather doing? Mom said to me

that she hasn’t heard from her in a while.

She’s still living in Plata Hills, right,

still being a screenwriter, dating handsome actors,

living the good life?

Mia:Mom talks to her every day when she can,

I talked to her on Tuesday. She’s got a contract

to write the script for a high school movie,

dealing with a class’ ten year reunion.

Emma:To think that ours will be in 2016!

That’s a pretty long time away from now.

I hope a few of us’ll be able to organize

and hold a reunion somewhere in Newmarket.

I’d be happy to attend:just think,me and you

and Manny and Spinner and Terri and Liberty

and Alex and Paige and Ashley, well, all of us,

just hanging out and having some fun!

Mia:That’ll be the day! So,how are Caitlin and Joey?

I heard they’re now in Welserland. Isn’t that

known as the Jungle Province? It’s down in South America, isn’t it?

Emma:I believe so! I hear it’s got rainforests, and you know

how I feel about them:their biodiversity means

they should be protected from certain people

and corporations who’d do them harm.

After Caitlin and Joey leave, they’ll go to LE

and visit Heather, then some of her family

who live in the area, then it’s back home for them.

I’m glad I have her for an honorary aunt

just like your mom and aunt:they’re all good people

and good friends to me and Mom both.

————

Liberty: Does his being a half-monster

necessarily have to say he's bad?

Maybe he's really got a human heart

beneath his monstrous look and body!

And the reason I say this is that I know him,

that's why I spoke so familiarly to him at the dance:

my brother Danny is friends with his brother,

who like him can transform and assume many shapes:

his name is Amfortas, and he works for the UPA government

helping to maintain the safety of their species

against people who'd have them killed or abused.

—————

These are Xekal and Nourgrim and Menwy the bold,

Wigalois of the Shadows, immortal Lamatur,

Balcmeg and Ynerden, brothers of a hundred battles,

and young Timuras from the Zhanin kingdom:

over there is Rodmund of the Seven Souls,

he whom once Earth knew as the great Sir Perceval,

and whose deeds are immortal in legends.

JT: Perceval? As in the one who sought the Holy Grail?

My grandpa read that to me as a bedtime story.

With Galahad and Bors he was one of only three

who was worthy enough to see the Grail in person

before it was taken to heaven along with Galahad.

But I thought he died soon after then,

his holiness making him too pure for Earth.

Drake: Not so,JT! He merely gave up a single soul.

On Emrys' advice he led a solitary life for many years

ere he returned among his fellow men.

The Emrys I refer to was Emrys Moridunius,

the seer whom today's legends know as Merlin.

NOAA-11

 1988-089A

NOAA H (NOAA 11), the fourth ATN satellite, was launched at 1002 on 1988 Sep 24 from Vandenberg. Its initial orbit was 102.1 min, 848 x 866 km x 98.9 deg; elements on Sep 25 gave the orbit as 102.1 min, 850 x 865 km x 98.9 deg. This satellite did not carry the ERBE and SUV payloads, but added sunshades for the instrument platform to allow a nodal crossing nearer noon. It was in an 8am/8pm orbit.

Payload:

  • AVHRR Advanced Very High Res Radiometer with optical and IR bands: 0.55-0.9,0.725-1.3,10.5-11.5,3.53-3.93 mu

  • SEM Space Environment Monitor (EEPAT,HEPAT,POD,TED)

  • DCS Data Collection System

  • TOVS Tiros Operational Vertical Sounder (temperature and humidity measurements by imaging in narrow bands: 3.7, 4.3 (CO2), 9.7, 11.1, 7x 15 (CO2), 3x 18 (rotnl bands) mu. Includes HIRS/2, SSU (Stratospheric sounding unit), and MSU.

  • APT APT on 136.77 MHz

  • SAR COSPAS-SARSAT receiver
