The ISAS Selenological and Engineering Explorer (SELENE) was the most ambitious lunar probe in a generation. It was named Kaguya after a Japanese mythological figure. The spacecraft was built by NEC Toshiba Space Systems. Launch mass 2779 or 2885 kg (COSPAR), 1720 kg dry A 113 kg prop reserve was quoted so in orbit mass was at least 1840 kg. Orbiter size 2.1 x 2.1 x 4.7m, shape was box + panel + 4 radar sounder booms + magnetometer mast.
The H2A 2022 launch vehocle was an H2A with 4S fairing and 2360SA PAF. It launched Kaguya into highly elliptical Earth orbit, where the probe's own propulsion was used to raise apogee to lunar distance and perform the lunar orbit insertion burn. Kaguya was captured into a 101 x 11741 km orbit and then performed burns to lower itself to a circular 100 km path. Two Toshiba relay satellites were carried, and were ejected during the orbit lowering process.
