1965-077A
E-6 No. 11 (Luna-7) was the closest yet to success. It returned to use of the 8K78 rocket. Launch was originally attempted on 1965 Sep 4 but delayed due to a malfunction on the pad during launch preparations. Launch came in the next window on Oct 4. Western reports indicated the retro burn occurred at too high an altitude, but Russian sources now reveal that the burn did not take place because of an attitude determination problem. The Military Industrial Commission threatened to cancel the program but Korolyov personally promised them that the next mission would succeed.
