The DOS-7 station was a further evolution of the earlier DOS (Salyut) vehicles and represented the culmination of the Soviet space station program. Launched in 1986, it remained in operation to the beginning of the new century.

The Mir basovoi blok (core module or base block) consists of four segments. A cylindrical work compartment consists of two cylinders. One, 2.9m in diameter and 3.4 m long contains the central control room for Mir (I will refer to it as Base Block Cylinder 1). The forward (-X axis in the Mir coordinate system; up at launch) end of this cylinder has a 0.3m long spherically curved bulkhead with a central 0.8m diameter hatch. The rear (+X axis; down at launch) of the cylinder connects to a 1.1m long conical transition section widening to a larger, 4.15m diameter cylinder 2.8m long. This cylinder, which I will call Base Block Cylinder 2, has a 1.3m long spherical bulkhead at the rear, with a 0.9m diameter hatch at the center. The work compartment has a floor (-Y axis) and a ceiling (+Y axis). An astronaut standing in the compartment facing the -X (forward) direction with their feet on the floor has the +Z axis to their left and the -Z axis to their right. Cylinder 2 has an airlock in the floor (-Y) through which garbage bags and small satellites may be ejected.

To the rear of cylinder 2 is the intermediate compartment, a small transfer tunnel 1.4m in length and 2.1m in diameter, containing the base block's 1.4m diameter +X docking port. This compartment is completely surrounded by the aggregate compartment, an unpressurized continuation of Cylinder 2, 4.15m in diameter and 2.2m long.

Forward of cylinder 1 a conical adapter section from 2.1 to 1.4m in diameter leads to the transfer compartment, an approximately spherical 1.8m diameter pressurized compartment with a docking port at the -X end, and four berthing ports at +Y, -Y, +Z, and -Z. Spacecraft can’t dock directly at these four ports, but once docked at -X they can be rotated to use the other ports.

Two solar panels are attached to the midpoint of cylinder 1 on the +Z and -Z sides.
