STS-41-D (Discovery)

 1984-093A

The first launch attempt came on Jun 26. SSME-2 ignited, but shut down after 2.6s, 4s before SRB ignition. The new launch attempt, on Aug 30, was successful.

An icicle formed on the supply and waste water dump nozzles. A partially successful attempt was made to knock the icicle off with the RMS, and plans were laid for a possible spacewalk to remove the remainder. Repeated heating of the area removed the remaining ice.

Polar Bear

 1986-088A

The followon to Hilat was based on spacecraft O-17, rescued from the Smithsonian and modified to become the Polar Beacon Experiment and Auroral Research satellite, Polar BEAR. It was launched in Nov 1986 to carry out a study of polar radio communications as Space Test Program flight P87-1. Above the Oscar a `pedestal' carried beacon electronics. Below it was the beacon wideband anteenna and the experiment deck.  After launch the spacecraft was checked out by APL and then controlled from Point Mugu.

The experiments included a UV auroral imager, AIRS, and an experiment to interrogate a ground-based sensor.

Chapter Text

(Marianne) Larke TANNER, born 22 August 1978, daughter of Alan and Mary (Long). Family worth:$155 million. School:NHHS. Aspiring model, actress, activist. Winner of numerous BHTC and NHHS contests and events.

Troy William JEFFRIES, born 8 January 1978, son of Edward and Claire (Galusha). Family worth:$260 million. School:NHHS. Heir to the Jeffries farm equipment fortune ($240 million at present). A sportive boy with a bright future. Current ASB Vice President at NHHS.

Bianca Heloise DUPREE, born 14 June 1978, daughter of Roland and Eleanor (Behrens). Family worth:$700 million. School:BHHS. At a net worth of $4 million just on her own, mainly through modeling contracts, this black-haired beauty is definitely one to watch.

Pierce Julian THORNDYKE (III), born 28 December 1977, son of Pierce and Annie (Avery). Family worth:$3 billion. School:BHHS. Heir to an old Hollywood fortune, worth $3 billion. Is believed to be close with Bianca Dupree (see above).

Radley Martin COLEMAN, born 5 March 1978, son of Fred and Cheryl (Finley). Family worth:$480 million. School:BHHS. A top-notch surfer and winner of quite a few of the BHTC’s aquatic sports prizes. Rumored to be a top contender for future Olympic Games.

Elizabeth Deborah PATTERSON, born 26 June 1978, daughter of John and Ellen (Richardson). Family worth:$20 million. School:BHHS. The daughter of one of California’s leading dentists,Elizabeth is involved with several activities at the Teen Club and her alma mater BHHS.

Maria Lucia SANTELLI, born 12 April 1978, daughter of Francis and Angela (Jeffries). Family worth:$175 million. School:HHS. First cousin of Troy Jeffries (see above). Her father is currently the deputy mayor of Beverly Hills. She is currently treasurer of the Teen Club.

Ashley Belle NICOLLIER, born 23 November 1977, daughter of Pierre and April (Sullivan). Family worth:$100 million. School:NHHS. Ashley is the daughter of two accomplished interior designers and hopes to follow in their footsteps when she’s older. She is chairperson of NHHS’s French Club.

Benjamin (Buck) Henry HUCKSTER, born 2 April 1978, son of Theo and Alicia (Loveday). Family worth:$400 million. School:HHCS. Buck is the BHTC’s chief of events promotion, being in charge of numerous dances, parties, galas, and (as he likes to joke) religious activities. He can often be found with his new Aston Martin.

Stacey Anne FARBER,born 25 August 1978, daughter of Marcus and Rachel (Germont). Family worth:$35 million. School:NHHS. Stacey is a general correspondent for The Beverline, the official weekly publication of the BHTC. She hopes to become an actress someday.

Nicole Corinne (Nikki) DARLING,born 16 May 1976, daughter of Justin and Belinda (Layton). Family worth:$1.25 billion. School:BHHS. Nikki likes to think of herself as the BHTC’s actress in residence, and she isn’t wrong about it either! She’s gotten parts in plays both at the BHTC and BHHS. She’s also a gym T.A. at BHHS,so she’s everywhere!

Wilshire Matthew BRENTWOOD,born 25 January 1978, son of David and Lynda (Carlyle). Family worth:$90 million. School:BHHS. Wilshire is Bianca Dupree’s chauffeur and personal assistant, dividing his time between his family mansion in Beverly Glen and the Dupree residence in Cheviot Hills.

Dana Lindsay LARSON,born 14 January 1978, daughter of Harry and Anne (Coyne). Family worth:$275 million. School:NHHS. Dana loves to rock and roll, being one of the seven members of Flight Risk, the BHTC’s semi-official band (she’s the lead vocalist and as close to a bandleader as they have). It’s rather appropriate that she’s set to inherit a musical instruments fortune when she grows up!

Johanna Christine (Jett) LYMAN,born 21 September 1977, daughter of Doug and Sophia (Winters). Family worth:$350 million. School:HHS. Jett is “one rockin’ girl” as she likes to describe herself, being the guitarist for Flight Risk, but that’s not all worth saying about her! She’s also a good watercolor and oil artist and she serves as a scorekeeper for the HHS girls’ soccer team.

Michael Douglas (Gig) LYMAN,born 22 September 1977, son of the above. School:HHS. Gig serves as the bass guitarist for Flight Risk and is also Vice President of the HHS student council,so he’s almost as accomplished as his twin sister is!

Emily Susan MAYER,born 10 June 1978, daughter of Ron and Elizabeth (Miller). Family worth:$650,000. School:NHHS. The daughter of the head of NHHS’ music department,Emily is Flight Risk’s drummer and hopes to become a music promoter someday.

Lynne Cynthia HENRY,born 3 August 1978, daughter of Max and Stephanie (Orbach). Family worth:$10 million. School:BHHS. By day,Lynne is an accomplished student at BHHS,hoping to go into the electronic arts after she graduates. By night,Lynne is the pianist and secondary vocalist for Flight Risk, and she also composes most of their lyrics.

(Jonathan) Guy CHESNEY,born 24 December 1977, son of Nathan and Heather (Bergstrom). Family worth:$900,000. School:NHHS. In addition to handling Flight Risk’s guitars,Guy is a poet and also helps garden at the Teen Club when he can. He’s also dating Lynne Henry (see above).

Maxwell Eugene DELLON,born 1 March 1978, son of Max Sr and Rose (D’Angelo). Family worth:$25 million. School:BHHS. Max is the keyboardist for Flight Risk, and he also is a student rep on the Clean Los Angeles’ Beaches Project.

Lauren Joanna COLLINS,born 2 September 1977, daughter of Zach and Sari (Bresver). Family worth:$95 million. School:BHHS. Lauren is the “road manager” (the quotes reflect a nominal title) for Flight Risk, helping keep the band members on their toes and booking gigs for them in the LA region.

Shanelle Erin SPENCER,born 16 March 1978, daughter of Jordan and Aimee (Denberg). Family worth:$200 million. School:BHHS. Newly elected to the presidency of the Teen Club,Shanelle is one of the Club’s sportiest members. She brings insight, levelheadedness, and wit to the Club’s operations and we’re all proud to have her!

Bruce Henry PATMAN,born 6 November 1977, son of Henry and Marie (Kahlbridge). Family worth:$400 million. School:HHS. Bruce is the newly elected Vice President of the Teen Club and is also a top student at HHS - surprising, given his legendary self-centeredness.

Brenda Julia (Switchboard) ANDES,born 2 August 1978, daughter of Richard and Camilla (Shand). Family worth:$2 billion. School:NHHS. Brenda considers herself the gossip maven of the Teen Club, although Caroline Pearce (see below) does so as well. Nevertheless,Brenda can be a good friend to have on your side. With looks, brains, and athleticism on her side,it’s safe to say that she’s a true triple threat!

Chester Steven ANDES,born 19 April 1982, son of the above. School:BHHS. Chester is one of the Teen Club’s resident geeks, another one being Layne Abeley (which see). He’s currently building a lab in what used to be a storage area for the Club, and he’s got plans to undertake all kinds of experiments using it. He’s so smart,in fact, that he tested into Beverly High early and will graduate with the class of 1997.

Blaise Josephine SUMMERS,born 18 December 1977, daughter of Martin and Chloe (Tanner). Family worth:$575 million. School:HHS. Blaise is a girl of many hats,be they equestrian, academic,or voluntary (her parents are on the board of the St James’ Soup Kitchen in Long Beach and she volunteers there on occasion). She and Larke Tanner (see above) are cousins and have been close friends for years.

Shawna Marie VERANO,born 20 February 1978, daughter of Adrian and Laura (Spencer). Family worth:$150 million. School:BHHS. Shawna Marie,in addition to being Shanelle Spencer’s cousin,is Secretary of the Teen Club and president of BHHS’ new Dance Club, not exactly a surprise given her ballet background. In fact,Shawna Marie has been scouted by both American and international ballet companies.

Heather Mae SANFORD,born 2 January 1978, daughter of Carl and Willa (van Rompuy). Family worth:$220 million. School:NHHS. Heather likes to consider herself a future buyer for LA’s top clothing brands - and we can’t say she’s wrong, given that she’s widely considered to be the Teen Club’s chief clotheshorse!

Jeannie Victoria WEST,born 15 May 1978, daughter of Richard and Beverly (McKeithen). Family worth:$75 million. School:HHS. Jeannie is the captain of the Beverly Hills Buccaneers, the girls’ softball team of the Teen Club. She’s also on the HHS tennis team and is President of their GRSM Club.

Abigail Bain RICHARDSON,born 3 July 1978, daughter of Philip and Georgia (Bain). Family worth:$40 million. School:NHHS. Abbie is the Teen Club Affairs reporter for The Beverline, rather appropriate given that she’s set to inherit a news media fortune when she’s older.

Belinda Janet (Bebe) MARSHALL,born 31 January 1978, daughter of Walter and Laura (Blume). Family worth:$20 million. School:BHHS. Bebe is as close to a resident artist as the Teen Club has,and it’s no surprise that she’s head of the unofficial Teen Club Improvement Team. It’s not uncommon for her realistically-painted oil paintings to grace the Teen Club’s halls.

Grace Diana BLUME,born 10 June 1978, daughter of Hal and Christine (Lawrence). Family worth:$55 million. School:BHHS. The bubbly,free-spirited cousin of Bebe Marshall,Grace is fairly active in the BHHS social scene, being the current vice-president (and chief party organizer!) of BHHS’ junior class.

Caroline Miriam PEARCE,born 19 January 1978, daughter of Paul and Anita (Cardew). Family worth:$325 million. School:HHS. Caroline has a rivalry with Brenda McTech (see above) for the title of Best Gossip of the Teen Club. Given that her family’s fortune comes from telecommunications,we’re not surprised!

(Sophie) Dylan MARVIL,born 26 May 1978, daughter of Joshua and Meredith (Johnson). Family worth:$95 million. School:HHS. The youngest daughter of Merri-Lee Marvil, the TV news anchor, this dynamic redhead is determined to forge her own path in life - she’d like to be a teacher!

Andrea Elizabeth SLADE,born 8 December 1977, daughter of Nancy and James (Peters). Family worth:$150 million. School:NHHS. Remember Nancy and Jamie, the Singing Slades, the pop star who loved his girlfriend so much he technically took her last name? Andrea’s their daughter, and it’s safe to say she’s inherited their talent. She’s a backup singer for Flight Risk but she’s shown interest in starting her own band, and we’ll definitely keep an eye on her.

Deanna Jayne (Dee Dee) GORDON,born 2 March 1978, daughter of Jerry and Hope (Buckley). Family worth:$400 million. School:BHHS. Dee Dee is another Teen Club sports star, being the captain of the newly formed Teen Club girls’ basketball team, and she’s also active in the local environmental protection scene.

(Lorraine) Regina MORROW,born 18 October 1977, daughter of Curtis and Emilie (van der Woodsen). Family worth:$850 million. School:HHS. You might know Regina as the cover model of the April issue of Teen Scene magazine. She’s the daughter of two monied families, both with wealth going back more than two centuries.

Alicia Samantha RIVERA,born 26 December 1975, daughter of Nadia and Leonard (Delacorte). Family worth:$175 million. Alma mater:NHHS. Alicia, being the daughter of a top model and a modeling executive,is quite experienced in the business and it’s no surprise that she’s eying such a career for her future. She’s also Nikki Darling’s roommate, and there may very well be something more between them given how they interact....

Todd Jackson WILKINS,born 5 February 1978, son of Bert and Jan (Nanna). School:HHCS. Family worth:$980,000. Todd’s a star both on the basketball court (he’s captain of the new HHCS boys’ basketball team) and off it as well, writing poetry for various art-related net sites and magazines.

Olivia Marie DAVIDSON,born 31 May 1978, daughter of Cyrus and Maria (Wingard). Family worth:$35 million. School:HHCS. Olivia, like Bebe Marshall,is one of the Teen Club’s resident artists and is taking acting courses as well. The latest Teen Club rumors have it that she’s romantically linked with Todd Wilkins.

Kristen Michelle GREGORY,born 14 December 1977, daughter of Raymond and Marcia (Fox). Family worth:$10 million. School:BHHS. Kristen has both a busy academic and social life, having won BHHS the 9th Annual Academic Quiz-Bowl last year and also having chaired the Teen Club Spring Fling Planning Committee.

(Elizabeth) Massie BLOCK,born 12 April 1978, daughter of William and Sylvie (Poulos), stepdaughter of Kendra (Farnsworth). Family worth:$275 million. School:HHS. Massie (she prefers to go by her middle name) is one of those girls who’s in a position of power (she’s the secretary of the HHS student council) and manages to make it work better for her being in it. She’s one of the Teen Club’s top fashionistas and it shouldn’t be much surprise that she and Heather Sanford are close friends.

Anna Charlotte WHITMAN,born 26 October 1978, daughter of John and Mona (Kirasich). Family worth:$40 million. School:BHHS. Annie’s a girl of talents both social and athletic, being the current captain of the BHHS cheerleading squad. She’s also the BHTC club service coordinator,an eventful job but one we know we can trust her with.

Cara Elizabeth WALKER,born 11 July 1978, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (O’Connell). Family worth:$125 million. School:NHHS. The older daughter of one of LA’s top mental health specialists,Cara is into the opposite type of health - she hopes to open her own gym someday!

Lavender Roberta BROWN,born 5 May 1979, daughter of Eric and Kimber (Oakland). Family worth:$6 billion. School:HHS. Lavender is Jeannie West’s co-captain of the Buccaneers and is also artistically talented - rather appropriate for a girl whose parents make their fortune in art collection.

(Vanessa) Layne ABELEY,born 16 December 1981, daughter of Eric and Robin (Planchette). Family worth:$50 million. School:BHHS. Layne could reasonably be called the resident girl geek of the Teen Club, alongside her friend Chester Andes (see above):in fact, she got early admission into Beverly Hills High alongside him. We wouldn’t be surprised if they actually got together in other areas, too!

Robin Marie WILSON,born 21 December 1977, daughter of Gordon and Belinda (Linley). Family worth:$10 million. School:NHHS. Robin is the newest captain of the NHHS cheer squad and also an avid painter, but her real interest lies in sociology and she hopes to become a social worker in the LA area.

Allison Janice HUNTER,born 12 February 1979, daughter of Leo and Sara (Holmes). Family worth:$8 million. School:HHS.

Amy Elizabeth HOLMES, born 20 October 1978, daughter of David and Mary Anne (Hunter). Family worth:$30 million. School:HHS. We’re treating these girls, cousins and somewhat close friends,in the same entry because they’re inseparable. It’s so rare to see them apart that such an occasion will easily excite comment. As to their personalities and interests,Allison is more politically minded (and, naturally, she and Maria Santelli are friends) while Amy is interested in journalism.

Alexandria Selena PAPPADOPOLOS, born 1 January 1978, daughter of Iason and Kyra (Farmer). Family worth:$90 million. School:BHHS. Alexa (so she prefers to have her friends call her) is the heiress to one of the largest Greek-American family fortunes currently extant,a family fortune built on financial investments. Although Alexa can afford to be a Teen Club member, her family home is less ostentatious than you’d expect for one of us: a townhouse at the extreme southern end of McCarty Drive. As they say: money talks, but wealth whispers

Olivia Jayne RYAN, born 20 August 1978, daughter of Duncan and Joanna (Wells). Family worth:$55 million. School:NHHS. Olivia, the daughter of a plastic surgeon and a pianist, has her own ambitions - this glamorous blond is hoping to be an author when she grows up!

(Elizaveta) Skye HAMILTON, born 24 December 1977, daughter of Zeke and Irina (Feoktistova). Family worth:$800,000. School:BHHS. Skye is a product of two worlds - the daughter of a perennial LA mayoral candidate and his dance teacher wife, herself the daughter of the architect of Russia’s moon landing program, she herself hopes to enter the hospitality industry when she’s older….but first,a little dancing!

Jaclyn Laura (Jacy) COLEMAN,born 26 May 1978, daughter of Stephen and Diana (Gettell). Family worth:$270,000. School:BHHS. This cousin of Radley’s is moving to Beverly Hills from Jefferson City to finish out her education after the recent death of her parents in the Southwest Flight 482 crash. We’re reliably informed that she’s very good in the media arts and that she’s a good tennis player, and we hope she feels welcome here!

AMPTE

 1984-088A

The Active Magnetosphere Particle Tracer Explorers (AMPTE) project saw the launch of three satellites on a single launch vehicle to study magnetospheric interaction with the solar wind and particle transport processes. AMPTE-IRM, the Ion Release Module, was German; AMPTE-UKS, the UK Subsatellite, was British; the US contribution, AMPTE-CCE, or Charge Composition Explorer satellite, was provided by JPL and built by APL in collaboration with GSFC. Launch was on 1984 Aug 16 at 1448 by a Delta 3924 launch vehicle from Launch Complex 17 at Cape Canaveral. The ELT Thor stage separated and the Delta stage ignited at T+3:56. At 1457 (T+9:49) Delta 175 entered parking orbit at 28 degrees inclination. At 1557 the Star 37E third stage ignited for 44s, separating at 1600 to place the AMPTE payload in a 558 x 49642 km x 28.7 deg orbit. At 1601 the CCE separated from the IRM/UKS stack, and at 2342 it fired its Star 13B solid motor to lower its inclination, ending in a 939.3 min, 1112 x 49690 km x 4.8 deg orbit. A yo-yo despin of the satellite was to be carried out after the spacecraft spin axis reached 76 deg to the sun. Its magnetometer boom was deployed at 0431 on 1984 Aug 17.

AMPTE-IRM was the German component of the international Active Magnetosphere Particle Tracer Explorers (AMPTE) project, together with the NASA AMPTE-CCE and British AMPTE-UKS satellites launched on the same vehicle.

The 605 kg, 2m x 7m satellite carried 16 lithium and barium canisters which were released to study the effect of adding the chemicals to the magnetosphere, making `artificial comets'. Each Li/CuO container is 15.5 kg, each Ba/CuO canister is 23 kg; they contain 5.9 and 13.5 kg of material respectively. They are launched in pairs at 1.7m/s and detonate 600s later. The PKM is 98 kg. Total launch mass is 705 kg (98 kg + 304 kg canisters + 303 kg IRM structure). It carried out solar wind ion releases in Sep 1984, an artifical comet release in Dec 1985, and magnetotail ion releases in Mar-May 1985.

If deployed perpendicular to the velocity vector the orbits of the canisters would be changed by 0.14 deg in inclination and unchanged in perigee/apogee; if deployed along the vector the perigee would change by of order 40 km.

 1965-067A

Mission 1023-1 operated from 1965 Aug 17 to 22, follwed by Mission 1023-2 from Aug 22 to Aug 26. The forward camera shut down for a period during the second mission (rev 103-132). The satellite was launched by TA Thor Agena D from PALC-1-1. (The official VAFB history office launch list designates the launch complex at that time as PALC-1, but the contemporary Launch Summary for the flight records it as ``South Vandenberg Complex I''.

STS-28 (Columbia)

 1989-061A

Columbia flew again in Aug 1989. The STS-28R mission was highly classified. It deployed two satellites, one large NRO communications satellite which is thought to have been boosted to Molniya orbit, and one small GAS-can-deployed experiment that may have been a GLOMR follow-on or an NRO sigint payload.
