Synchronous Meteorological Satellite 1 was launched at 0931 on 1974 May 17 by Delta 2914 from Cape Canaveral. The Thor first stage shut down prematurely at 0935 after a LOX tank pressure loss; the Delta burned from 0935 to 0940 and reached a 155 x 213 km x 28 deg parking orbit with insufficent propellant to make its second 8s burn. After a 14 minute coast, the Star 37E third stage ignited at 0954. After it separated at 0956, SMS 1 was in a 182 x 33250 km x 24 deg transfer orbit, significantly lower in apogee than planned. The solid SVM-5 apogee motor fired at 0700 on May 19, and was followed by 9 daily thruster burns to raise the altitude. Finally on Jun 4 SMS 1 was near geostationary at 86 deg W. After a brief checkout it was stationed at 45W for GATE (the GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment). SMS 1 was turned over to NOAA for operational use on 1974 Dec 10 despite problems with the S-band transmitter. By 1975 Oct it had been moved back to 75 W, which was to become the operational GOES East position. In early 1976 it was moved to 105W as a standby satellite, after being replaced by GOES 1. On 1979 Jan 26 it arrived at the GOES E position to replace GOES 2 in the First GARP Global Experiment (FGGE), but after SMS 1 had S-band transmitter problems in April GOES 2 took over again and SMS 1 moved to the side. SMS 1 spent 1980 at 131W backing up the GOES W position. On 1981 Jan 29 the orbit was raised by 500 km and SMS 1 was decommissioned a few days later.

ARGOS

The P91-1 ARGOS satellite was launched in 1999 Feb by Delta from Vandenberg. Orbit will be 900 x 900 km x 98.7 deg. ARGOS (Advanced Research and Global Observation Satellite) is built by Boeing (fka Rockwell) Seal Beach, for the USAF. The largest experiment is the ESEX arcjet thruster, with a power of 30 kW. It will be used for system tests but will not alter the spacecraft's orbit. Mass is 2490 kg. The USA experiment, using SPTN-1 proportional counters, will carry out very long (1 month) exposures on bright X-ray sources for time variability studies.

Argos is managed by the Tri-Service Spacecraft Div., STP, Kirtland AFB.

A first launch try on Jan 28 failed when a vernier engine did not ignite.

Lunar Prospector

Lunar Prospector was selected in Mar 1995 as part of the Discovery program. It will be built and operated by Lockheed Missiles and Space Co/Sunnyvale; NASA oversight of the project is managed by NASA-Ames which also controls the probe.

The spacecraft is a spin stabilized solar-panel-covered cylinder 1.4m dia, 1.22m high surrounding a triangular inner structure based on the Iridium satellite, and has a hydrazine propulsion system with six Olin MR-106E 22N thrusters with total mission impulse of at least 239 kNs. Three booms unfold to carry the experiments, a magnetometer boom 3.8m long and two instrument booms 2.5m long. Mass is 158 kg dry, 296 kg fuelled. The spacecraft carried a special Celestis capsule with some of the ashes of lunar scientist Gene Shoemaker, who died in a car accident the previous year.

Launch was Jan 1998 by LMA Athena-2 with a Model 92 fairing (92 inch diameter) from Cape Canaveral's Florida Spaceport Authority LC46. It will be inserted in a 100 x 100 km, 118 min lunar polar orbit. The Athena-2 has two Castor 120 stages, an Orbus 21D Equipment Section Boost Motor, and an Orbit Adjust Module.

As well as the LP payload, Athena-2 carries a TLI stage. The TLI stage is built around a Thiokol Star 37FM (TE-M-783-7) solid motor and a Thiokol graphite interstage adapter. The TLI Stage is 0.17m long and 0.21m in diameter with a fueled mass of 1227 kg and an empty mass of 212 kg. (The Star 37FM has thrust 45.8 kN, impulse 2894 kNs and burn time 63s, with diameter 0.94m and length 1.68m). The TLI stage also has spinup motors which fire prior to LP separation to spin-stabilize the LP.

Launch mass of S/C + TLI stage is 1523 kg.

The neutron spectrometer will help in the search for hydrogen and water ice; the alpha particle spectrometer will detect outgassing events. 

In 1998 preliminary evidence was reported for substantial amounts of ice at the lunar poles.

End of mission in 1999 will have impact at 42E 87.7S.

According to Alan Binder's book on LP the TLI stage reentered over the Indian Ocean 'several days after launch'. First perigee may have been around 2030 UTC Jan 15.
