GOES 1

In 1975 the SMS C satellite was renamed GOES A to reflect its operational mission. The 293 kg GOES A was launched at 2240 on 1975 Oct 16 by a Delta 2914 rocket from Cape Canaveral. At 2249 the Delta second stage reached a 187 x 930 km x 27 deg orbit; the Star 37E third stage fired to place the payload in a 200 x 36796 km transfer orbit at 2304. Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite 01 fired its solid apogee motor at 1451 on Oct 17, entering synchronous orbit at 65 deg W with a 2 deg W per day drift. On Oct 25 it was stopped at 55 deg W to begin on orbit testing. GOES 1 was declared operational on 1976 Jan 8, and control was switched from NASA to the NOAA-NESS ground station in Wallops Island, Virginia. GOES 1 was later moved over the Pacific at 135W. In 1978 Jun the EPM and Solex experiments failed. Also in 1978, the satellite was assigned to the European Space Agency as part of the Global Atmospheric Research Program (GARP). It was moved to 10W for training of ESA controllers at the Villafranca, Spain, ground station, and then to the Indian Ocean where it took part in the First GARP Global Experiment (FGGE). In Dec 1979 GOES 1 was returned to NOAA's control and sent to the GOES-W position at 135W. In Mar 1980 it was placed on standby at 93W, and on Jun 18 operational transmissions were ended. In 1980-82 it was stored near 120-130W, but then its VISSR imager was reactivated to replace the failed GOES 4 and it was moved to 126W. The end of the mission came in 1985: on Feb 3 GOES 1's radiometer failed and the satellite was switched off and allowed to drift in the geostationary ring between 81W and 130W.

Gambit 36

KH-7 36 (GAMBIT 36) was launched on 1967 Feb 2 by Atlas Agena D from Vandenberg. It remained in orbit for 10 days, with the Agena rocket reentering after 2 days. The orbit shows little change through Feb 6; the next archival element set on Feb 10 shows a very low orbit, followed by a more circular orbit with a higher perigee on the next day, possibly indicating an orbital change associated with recovery. The SRV was recovered on Feb 10.

STS-80 (Columbia)

STS-80 was notable for being the last flight of Story Musgrave, who had now made 6 space flights and became the oldest space traveller to date. Launch of STS-80 was delayed for several weeks because of concerns about nozzle erosion on STS-79. A two minute hold was called just prior to T-31s because of a small hydrogen leak.

STS-80 carried a set of scientific experiments. The third flight of the Wake Shield Facility and the third flight of the ASTRO-SPAS saw two free flyers out from the Shuttle at once for the first time. After launch on 1996 Nov 19, SPAS was deployed on Nov 20 carrying the ORFEUS ultraviolet telescope. Then on Nov 23 WSF was deployed, after several hours `scrubbing' out on the RMS arm. WSF was then recaptured on Nov 26, but SPAS remained free until Dec 4.

An extensive Space Station development spacewalk series, EDFT-5, was planned for STS-80, but had to be abandoned when Jernigan and Jones were unable to open the airlock door. After repressurization, Musgrave came in without a suit and tried to release the door himself - the air pressure would have kept the door safely closed, but in the event he was unsuccessful. After the flight, a loose part was discovered in the gear mechanism.

Apollo CSM 118 was stood down from its role as Skylab Rescue on 1973 Sep 9 (see SL-3). Launch as Skylab SL-4 was at 1401:23 on 1973 Nov 16. It reached a 154 x 224 km x 50.0 deg Earth orbit at 1411:10. The S-IVB stage separated at 1426:22.

The rendezvous burns began at 1624 with a 2-second SPS firing. By 1958 UT the ship was in a 412 x 421 km orbit, and rendezvous was complete by 2126. SL-4 docked at the axial port on the third attempt at 2202. The hatches were opened at 1430 on Nov 17. The CSM was powered down on Dec 4. Meanwhile, on 3 Dec the SA-209 rocket arrived at pad 39B with Apollo CSM 119 on top. CSM 119 would be Skylab Rescue with the Brand-Lind crew if a rescue were needed for this mission.

CSM 118 was powered up again on 1974 Feb 6. The crew had entered the spaceship by 0615 on Feb 8 and installed the docking probe at 0630. A test burn with the RCS thrusters was made at 0815. Undocking came at 1034 and was followed by a flyaround of Skylab. At 1100:07 an RCS sep burn changed the orbit from 433 x 456 km to 430 x 456 km. An SPS orbit shaping burn at 1132:54 lowered the orbit to 168 x 430 km. The SPS fired again at 1435:59 for the deorbit burn. The SM separated and the CM reentered, splashing down in the Pacific at 1516:55 on 1974 Feb 8. Landing was at 119 48 12W 31 18 12 N It was recovered by the USS New Orleans.

This satellite was a standard GAMBIT but used for an area survey mission instead of close-look on point targets. The Dual-Mode modifications included increasing retro impulse by 20 percent and improved main propulsion system restart capability. The payload adapter joint was modified so that it could survive a restart of the main engine.

The photo mission lasted 119 days. The mission report says that the high mode portion lasted 97 days and the low mode was 23 days.

After the first day, 1982-06A circularized its orbit at 600 km. Successive orbital adjustments raised the orbit to 624 x 657 km by Mar 10. One object left in the initial orbit is listed as a rocket body in the Satellite Catalog, but this seems unlikely - it is probably the viewport hatch. It reentered on the second day.

On Mar 20, the first SRV recovery was commanded, but the SRV failed to separate. The SRV was then commanded to separate from its heat shield and thrust cone, to get it off the Agena. Three new objects were cataloged in orbit around Mar 21, presumably two of these are the bucket and the heat shield; the third may be the thrust cone if it had then separated from the Agena, or the parachute system.

On around Apr 28, the spacecraft was moved to a low orbit. However, archived TLEs show the 1982-06A object moving to a higher 633 x 644 km orbit and steadily decaying - this is rather surprising and appears to be deliberate misinformation, or possibly tracking confusion with the SRV debris. A fourth object cataloged in April is probably the fairing separating SRV-1 from SRV-2. To ensure its recovery despite its faulty motor, on May 23 the second SRV was deorbited with the entire spacecraft, using the Agena's propulsion.

It was originally intended to use the main propulsion system for the deorbit burn. The prop isolation valves were opened on rev 1792, but this caused attitude contrl problems and the valves were closed on rev 1794. It took some time to recover control of the vehicle, and three days later the ISPS secondary propulsion system was used for the deorbit on rev 1845. The impact point was recorded as 11.91N, 188.09E.
