Kosmos-1601 resumed Romb launches after a year-long gap. 28 objects instead of the usual 24 were cataloged. The first four objects had much smaller radar cross sections and decayed more rapidly; they may have been targets of a different type or covers for the dispenser system.

Orizuru

The H-I LE-5 second stage from the Momo-1b flight carried a supplementary technology experiment called DEBUT, the Deployable Boom and Umbrella Test. It was named Orizuru (an origami crane) after launch.

DEBUT was built by NAL. The satellite was a 0.44m 26-sided polyhedron similar to the JAS/Fuji satellites, with a 0.2m box containing the boom system on top. The umbrella deployed at the end of the boom was a test for aerodyamic braking; it was 0.90m dia when open. Mass of the umbrella was 4 kg. The 5 kg boom is 1.20m long deployed; overall deployed height 1.94m. Total mass 50.3kg. The spacecraft operated 10 days.

The boom was deployed and retracted 34 times and the ADB was opened and closed 52 times.

The DS-U2-MT No. 1 satellite (Meteoritniy) carried a micrometeorite detector and a gamma ray burst spectrometer. It was launched in Dec 1971 on a Kosmos-3M from Plesetsk into an orbit with the unusual inclination of 69 degrees and named Kosmos-461.

Explorer 29

Geos A (Geos 1 or Explorer 29 after launch) was launched on 1965 Nov 6 by Delta E from Cape Kennedy. It entered a higher orbit than planned, 120.30 min 1115 x 2277 km x 59.4 deg rather than 1100 x1480 km. This was a test flight of the new Delta E's improved second stage, and it failed to shut down on time. The initial ascent was to a 33 degree orbit (108 deg azimuth); part of the yaw to 59 deg must have happened during stage 2 burn, as the stage 3 impulse, which occurred over the equator, is insufficient to make the turn. Geos I was operational on Nov 8 and operated until 1967 Dec 17.
