STS-129 (Atlantis)

Stott will become an STS crewmember at STS hatch open.

Possible jettison of MMOD shields on Quest at HPGT O2 tank location. HPGS transfer fro S3/ELC2 to AL during EVA3.

Work to prep Node 1 for installation of Node 3 on port CBM.

EVAs: On STS entry: EV1 3011, EV2 3006.

EMUs 3018 and M3010 (with the 'Mega PLSS') were brought up to ISS (and used by Foreman and Satcher for EVAs). EMUs 3006 (used by Bresnik) and M3011 were brought down at the end of the mission, leaving 3018, M3010, 3009 and a spare HUT torso (2026) on ISS.

STS-129 is ISS ULF3. It will carry two ELC logistics carriers carrying spares; the ELCs will be attached to the truss. ELC1 goes to UCCAS 2 install point on P3 Lower. ELC2 goes to PAS 1install point on S3 upper outboard. MISSE 7 will be installed on ELC2; SASA will be stowed on Z1, and the HGPT will be removed from ELC2 and installed on Quest.

ELC1 will be on P3 lower UCCAS, inboard side.

Cargo 16057 kg up, left 12774 on orbit, brought extra 130 down: net 3413 down MECO mass estimate 116000 kg so 99943 up Landing mass 93062 kg - 3413 = 86949 down Consumables 658 kg. MD 1003 kg up, 957 kg down, including 2 EMU up and down, and COL-AIS, WETA up (unaccounted: 689 up 697 down) Per STS summary: Transfer 14419 kg to ISS total - with 12532 ELCs and 1003 kg MD, that leaves 884 kg external. 242 kg is accounted for by known externals, 593 kg unaccounted. Per MR: Transfer 13462 kg total, of which 1003 MD and 12459 external - that seems too low, not allowing for the MISSE etc. Return 499 kg PLB, 957 kg MD.

Herschel

The FIRST far-infrared space telescope mission, twinned with Planck Surveyor, will fly in 2007 to L2. It was renamed Herschel in 2000. Alcatel/Cannes is prime and PLM builder, with Astrium/Fredrichshafen? building the cryostat and Alenia the SVM. Mass is 3402 kg including a 2560 kg cryostat. Size is 7.5h 4.5d cylinder + dish + sunshade. (9.0h?)

Carries 256 kg of hydrazine.

Herschel is the upper passenger with an adapter connecting it to Planck.

Ariane 5ESV's EPC enteres a 55 x 4000 km parking orbit. EPS fires to enter a 100? x 1300000 km transfer orbit to L2. The trajectory enters a large L2 halo without an insertion maneuver. At EPS burnout, Herschel and the adapter separate from Planck, then Planck separates from EPS. After arrival, Planck maneuvers to enter a tighter halo of around 200000 x 100000 km, while Herschel stays in the initial path of 700000 x 400000 km around L2.

Control from Perth.

Primary mirror is 3.5m dia, made of 12 petals of silicon carbide. Launch by Ariane 5 L546 on flight V188.

Planck is on a SAAB PAS 2624VS, udner a Sylda 5F. Herschel is on a SAAB PAS 2624VS mounted on the Sylda.

Sylda returned to perigees around 27 Aug and 22 Oct before being perturbed to solar orbit. ESC-A and two fragments passed through the L2 region and entered solar orbit directly.

XM-2 (Rock)

Two HS-702 DARS satellites, XM-Rock and XM-Roll, were ordered from Hughes in 1998 by AMRC (American Mobile Radio Corp), later XM Radio, for delivery on orbit by Delta 3 in Apr and Aug 2000, carrying Alcatel digital radio S-band payloads.

XM Radio seems to be part of Motient. The satellite was retired in 2014.

Apstar 2

Apstar 2R is an FS-1300 to be launched by LM-3B. In 1999, Loral Skynet leased the entire capacity of the satellite to replace its failed Orion 3 satellite; the successor company Telesat ended the lease in 2009.

Size 31 m span, 8.6m x 9.3m deployed. Mass 3747 kg at launch.

The CZ-3B stage second burn was about 2.6km/s, requiring a mass ratio of 1.83 and the post-burn mass was around 6750 kg including payload assuming 200 kg residual fuel. This implies a propellant usage of 5600 kg.

The satellite is also known as Apstar 4 and Telstar 10.

Integral

The 3600 kg Integral (International Gamma Ray Astrophysics Lab) satellite is scheduled for launch in 2002 Apr by Proton. The joint ESA/NASA/IKI project is ESA's M2 mission. It will be placed in a 48000 x 115000 km x 51.6 deg orbit. Prime contractor is Alenia Spazio/Torino, and the service module (SVM) uses the XMM design.

The IBIS coded mask telescope has 12' resolution with 1' position accuracy. There are two detectors at IBIS' focus, ISGRI and PICsIT, with approx dE/E = 0.08, optimized at different energy ranges. The detectors are one below the other, so they both have the same field of view. ISGRI has a 2 x 4 array of 32 x 64 pixel detectors, making a total of 128 x 128 pixels. PICsIT is 64 x 64 pixels. A central 9x9 degree FOV can be fully imaged, with partial information on a 29x29 deg FOV; the actual FOV is larger due to “dithering”. The JEM-X instrument has two smaller 0.535m coded mask telescopes; the 0.7m SPI telescope and the OMC optical monitor are coaligned with JEM-X and IBIS.

AMC-23

SES Global's AMC-23 was launched on Dec 29 by an International Launch Services/Krunichev Proton-M with a Briz-M upper stage. AMC-23 is an Alcatel Alenia/Cannes Spacebus 4000 satellite which was originally built as Americom 13, then Worldsat 3, and is now to provide Ku-band and C-band multimedia and telecom services over the Pacific. The C-band payload will be partly used by the Japanese JSAT system.
