1960-F01
Discoverer IX (Mission 9006) was launched on 1960 Feb 4, but its Thor stage shut down 17 seconds early, and then the Agena lost attitude control. Discoverer 9 plunged into the Pacific 600 km south of Vandenberg.
Flight 9 carried the first APL TOD system, with a doppler radio beacon for orbital determination using the Transit method, and an optical beacon observed by SAO cameras on the ground for comparison.
