Taiyo

1975-014A

The Solar Radiation and Thermospheric Satellite (SRATS) was named Taiyo (Sun) after launch. The 86 kg satellite was launched into elliptical orbit.

Taiyo was an octagonal cylinder 0.7h 0.75d with four 0.5m booms.

Stage 3 is 1.14dia 2.34m long, with a mass 1254 kg full 170 kg empty, and burn time 53s, thrust 66.7 kN, Isp 284s.

It observed solar activity, in situ thermospheric plasma, and ozone backscatter. The objective was to study the effects of solar radiation at solar minimum on the low latitude thermosphere. Taiyo observed high radiation levels in the SAA.
