Corona 137

 1970-016A

KH-4B Mission 1109 was launched by Thorad Agena D from Vandenberg on 1970 Mar 4. The Thor had a 'cold burn' and ran to fuel depletion, 71m/s slow; the Agena made up all but 15m/s of the shortfall, leading to an initial orbital period 0.50 min lower than planned; two DMU rockets were fired to restore the orbit.

In addition to the two SRVs and the J-3 camera system, Mission 1109 carried the first in a series of Doppler Beacon supplementary payloads. The Doppler Beacons carried a 162/324 MHz transmitter which was used for geodetic position determinations. Doppler Beacon was operated for the US Navy by the Applied Physics Lab (JHU/APL). The DB data was combined with DISIC data for geodetic results. The 1109 photography mission gave good coverage on most of the Soviet ICBM complexes, and the first good coverage of the Moscow area since May 1967. It also observed the Chinese-Soviet border, surface-to-air missile sites in Egypt, and various parts of China, North Korea, North Vietnam and Laos. However, bad weather hindered observations of the IRBM sites in the west of the USSR and of the South China area.
