The STS-35 mission was plagued with hydrogen leaks in the aft compartment of Columbia. The 17-inch ET disconnect and the recirculation pumps were replaced; problems in the engine prevalves were found, and the entire LH2 system on OV-102 was retorqued.
The Astro-1 mission finally got off the ground on 1990 Dec 2 at 0649. After orbit insertion at 0657, the astronauts carried out the ET photo DTO (a test objective to photograph the external tank after separation) at 0707. The OMS 2 burn at 0729 circularized the orbit.
The HUT and UIT ultraviolet telescopes gathered a bounty of far ultraviolet data which remained unsurpassed early into the next century. The BBXRT telescope proved the thin-foil telescope and CCD detectors that would later be used on the ASCA satellite.
