GOES-7

 1987-022A

Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite 07 (GOES H) was launched by Delta 3914 from Cape Canaveral at 2305 on 1987 Feb 26. The Delta second stage entered a 21 degree parking orbit, separated and executed a depletion burn, ending up in a 252 x 3904 km x 21.7 deg orbit. Meanwhile the Star 37E third stage fired to enter a 284 x 40835 km x 18.1 deg transfer orbit. GOES 7 separated and at 1746 on Feb 27 fired its solid motor to enter a drift orbit at geostationary altitude. The archival orbital data is a little inconsistent; an element set which matches this burn was issued with the printed TLEs but is no longer in the public archive. Assuming it is correct, another burn was made on Mar 1 which lowered the orbit to only a 1343 min period, below the geostationary ring, before another burn raised it again to 1380 min on Mar 2. By Mar 5 it was on station at 81.5 deg W for checkout. By Apr 10 it had taken up GOES E duties at 75W, giving a two satellite GOES system for the first time since 1984. In early 1989 it moved to 108W. From Jul to Oct of 1989, 1990 and 1991 it was moved to 98W for a better view of the hurricane season. In Jan 1992 it was moved to 112W, arriving in Apr 1992. In 1998 the satellite was left to drift; and in the 2000s it was transferred to PEACESAT for Pacific Island communications.
