Odin

 2001-007A

SSC's Odin astronomy satellite will fly on an STC-Komplex Start-1 in 1998 from Svobodny.

Odin has a dual mission to study the interstellar medium and aeronomy. The astronomy mission involves 500 GHz and 119 GHz observations of molecular clouds and other sources. The aeronomy part studies the stratosphere and mesosphere, scanning the earth limb from 15 to 120 km. It will study the ozone layer.

Mass is 250 kg; size box + plate + antenna 2.0m h 3.8m span 1.1m packed dia. 1800 LT SSO. The spacecraft has four solar manels mounted on the aft sunshade. Odin is built by SSC. SSC reports to SNSB (Swedish National Space Board).

DS stage remained attached to St 4?

The astronomy part of the mission ended in spring 2007. In 2008 Odin's mission was extended again as it continued climate change studies.
