The first launch of the 'Upgraded' or 'Full Thrust' Falcon 9 was also the return to flight mission after the CRS-7 failure. The second stage carried three ESPA rings, mounting 11 OG2 satellites and one mass simulator.

The plan was to land stage one at LZ-1, formerly LC13.

Satellites in the group were 102, 105, 108, 110, and 112 to 118.
