2000-017A
The Imager for Magnetopause to Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) satellite was a MIDEX program for space science. Principal investigator institution was the SWRI (Southwest Research Institute of San Antonio, Texas).
It was launched into a polar orbit by Delta 7326-9.5 with an apogee of 43000 km. The radio sounders will probe the boundaries of the magnetosphere and plasmasphere. The aurora will be imaged in the ultraviolet, and neutral atom imagers will investigate magnetospheric ion populations. The NAIs will measure energy, mass and angle of the atomic species.
The spacecraft is an LM100 satellite, although the structure is different from that of Lunar Prospector. Orbit is 100 x 43000 km x 90.
IMAGE is an octagon 2.3m dia 1.52 high with a mass of 494 kg. The axial booms are 20m tip to tip. Four radial antennae, 500m tip to tip (each 250 m long) and 0.3mm dia. The spacecraft spins at 0.5 rpm. The radial wire antennae have a mass of 0.2 kg each and the booms have a mass of 2 kg each.
The Delta 7326 had a Star 37FM stage 3. Star37FM is 1148 kg full 74 empty. Isp is 289.8s.
The Star 37 yo weights are 0.05 x 0.08m masses attached to a 0.07m dia 9.78m long Kevlar cable, mass is 0.78 kg.
