ESSA 9

  1969-016A

TOS G was the last of the Tiros I class TOS satellites, launched to back up ESSA VII, one of whose cameras had failed. Because of scheduling conflicts at Vandenberg it was launched from Cape Kennedy using a three stage Delta E1, requiring three dog-leg maneuvers during ascent to the polar sun-synchronous 1427 x 1508 km x 101.8 deg orbit. Launch was at 0747 on 1969 Feb 26 from Launch Complex 17 at Cape Kennedy and injection was south of Panama. ESSA IX transmitted until 1973 Nov 15.
