3MV-1 No. 4 was the first of the 3MV series to leave Earth orbit, and it was named AMS `Zond', later known as Zond-1. Communications with the spacecraft were lost in May. A trajectory correction on May 14 underburned by 20 seconds and Zond-1 passed around 100000 km from Venus.
