Luna 18

  1971-073A


After Lunokhod 1, the E-8 program tried to repeat the sample return success of Luna-16 with E-8-5 No. 407 (Luna-18). However, the spacecraft crash-landed on the lunar surface during the second descent burn.

Classified Russian Defense Ministry satellite launched in Apr 2003. The Proton used a 49.2 deg transfer orbit. Upper stage was 11S861 No 96L.

According to Kommersant newspaper it was a 71Kh6 US-KMO geostationary early warning satellite with a mass of 2155 kg.

TES/Proba-1

Technology (or Test) Evaluation Satellite.

ISRO imaging satellite to develop Indian reconnaissance capability. The TES project began in 1999 as a response to inadequate intelligence about a Pakistani incursion into Kashmir. 500 km orbit by PSLV. The satellite featured high torque reaction wheels and miniaturized power and control systems, as well as a new camera, a new propellant tank and reaction control systems. The satellite had 1-meter resolution and used a camera with about 70cm aperture.

Mass is 1108 kg; launched with 94 kg PROBA and 92 kg BIRD. BIRD and PROBA are mounted on side platforms on the PS4 stage. TES was still operating in 2005 according to the 2005 ISRO report, and the 2015 Rao book implies it was still functioning after 14 years in space.

The satellite was redesignated an ESA Earth Observation 'third party mission' after its techology mission was complete.

Servicing Mission 3B was delayed to late 2000 following the addition of 3A and later slipped to 2002. ACS will replace FOC. ACS has three cameras. The WFC, with two 4096 x 2048 CCDs, has a 3.5' FOV and covers the 3700A -1 micron range. HRC, the High Resolution Channel, has a 0.45' FOV and a 1024 x 1024 CCD, covering the 2000 A to 1 micron range. SBC, the Solar Blind Channel, has a 0.5' FOV, a 1024 x 1024 PCA array and covers the 1100 - 1800A range.

EVA 1: install SA and diode box, -V2. (RAC) Install wire harness to diode box. Install thermal covers on WFPC and bays. EVA-2, install SA and diode box, +V2. (RAC) Replace RWA (MULE). EVA 3: Power controller unit replacement (SAC). Telescope completely powered down. Thermal covers installed to protect critical equipment. EVA 4: swap FOC for ACS (SAC); ESM (MULE). Demate FOC and stow on sill; install CASH wire harness for cooling system; install ACS. EVA 5: Install NICMOS cryocooler (SAC); then install NCS radiator (MULE).

Launch mass 116987 kg, landing mass 100562 kg. MECO mass 115817 kg. MECO orbit 56 x 571 x 28.5 deg.

Palm tree after palm tree whipped past the car as they passed through the neighborhood of Benedict Canyon. Claudia's arm rested on the edge of the passenger door. Her sunglasses were perched on the edge of her perky nose,and her hair was done in a ponytail. From time to time other drivers honked their horns her way. Austin couldn't help but notice.

"What can I say,Steve? We're a handsome family. Even Leslie got to be pretty after her awkward phase. I won't even begin to mention April and Jo. I swear they'll be two of LA's top beauties by 1976. April's already gonna be on the cover of Teen magazine."

Austin raised an eyebrow at the news as they passed the old Holiday Inn Beverly. "Already?"

"Yeah. She's already done the photoshoot,last Thursday. Assuming things don’t go south she should be on the April 1974 cover. Rather appropriate if you ask me”, Claudia laughed.

At launch, a LOX pump failed due to debris and the rocket exploded in a spectacular fireball which enveloped the floating launch platform, as the flame trench supports failed and the rocket fell through into the sea. In the event the platform suffered very little damage and was able to sail home a few days later.

Fleetsatcom 7

FLTSATCOM F7 (NASA manifest designation FLTSATCOM G) was launched out of sequence in 1986. It became the FLTSATCOM Pacific satellite. F7 and later satellites carried an experimental EHF (20/40 GHz) channel as part of the development program for MILSTAR. It also carried the first Star 37FM apogee motor, replaceing the Star 37F used previously.

Swift

The Swift Gamma Ray Burst Explorer is a MIDEX mission selected mid 1999. PI Gehrels/GSFC. Spectrum Astro SA-200LL bus. (SA-200HP version). Launch by Delta 7320-10 to 600 x 600 km x 20 deg orbit. Control from GSFC via Malindi.

Size is 2.4h 1.7dia 1470 kg. ( 1331 kg as of 2003, 1550 kg max). Deployed 5.6m high 5.4m wide. Irreg cyl + 2 panels

XRT is f=3.5m 0.35m dia, 15" res, 23 arcmin FOV. with one 600 x 600 EPIC-MOS type CCD. Area 110 cm2 at 1.5 keV.

The largest instrument is BAT, a box about 2.5m across 1.5m high. It has a coded mask telescope with a CdZnTe solid state detector. Effective area is 5200 cm2 and FOV is 1.4 sr with 17 arcmin PSF. Swift/BAT will also do a hard x-ray survey.

The UVOT optics were built from XMM/OM flight spares.
