Launch to 83E. Carries one experimental nav transponder, as well as comms payload of a Ka-band regenerative bent-pipe transponder.
GAGAN is a GPS augmentation system (and 'Gagan' is Hindi for 'sky').
Satellite was Box + 2 panels I-2K bus 2220 kg full 1063 kg dry. SIze 2.4 x 1.6 x 1.5m with ? span.
Launch by GSLV-D3 from SHAR using CUS upper stage with ISRO Cryogenic Engine. GSLV Mk II first flight, with enlarged 8.7m long 4m dia fairing. The CUS has the main ICE of 69.5 kN and two verniers of 2 kN each. Prop flow rate is 16.6 kg/s. The stage 3 turbopump failed after 1 second and the mission failed to reach an appreciable orbit.
