STS-102 (Discovery)

 2001-010A

Flight 5A.1 was the first MPLM logistics mission. The ICC was used to carry external cargo; the Early Ammonia Servicer was reassigned to 7A.1 shortly before launch.

Two EVAs were planned: first, stowing umbilicals on PMA-3 and stowing the port ECOMM antenna on Unity. Then, installing the LCA and the PDGF-RU from the ICC to Destiny, as well as the ESP and the PFCS.

A new ascent trajectory set the ET into impact E of New Zealand. Orbit insertion mass (post OMS2) is around 113400 kg. As Discovery reached the V-bar, one P6 solar array was not latched, and the crew were ordered to remain outside 120m. Finally the latches were locked, and the approach resumed a half-hour behind schedule.

Usachyov becomes a Station crew member shortly after hatch open; he takes command effectively when Shepherd switches with Helms on Mar 14 and there is a formal transfer before hatch closure.

Voss (EV-1) and Helms (EV-2) will make EVA-1.

Kelly operated the arm during the main part of the EVA, and handed over to Thomas for the PMA-3 move. There were problems docking PMA-3 to Unity. As Voss and Helms waited in the airlock, Thomas pushd PMA-3 on the RMS into the CBM, but pulled out again when the alignment was not quite right.

PAD is 0.3m x 0.2m, 5 kg, it is used to attach the PFR to the RMS.

At the end of EVA-2, repressurization began but was immediately halted on Houston's order. For DTO 257, a test of the Shuttle's RCS while docked to the ISS, controllers wanted a depressurized airlock, since the airlock's proximity to the Shuttle/ISS interface means the dynamics depends on the state of the airlock. The airlock had reached 1.8psi and was depressurized again, staying at zero for a further 14 minutes.

Total transfer: MPLM to ISS 4380 kg (Racks, stowage items, RSR/RSP stowage); 4821 kg including 10 CWCs with 440 kg of water. ISS to MPLM: 750 kg. (Down cargo 1193 kg per SS Almanac, 493 kg per SODB).

The SODB gives the deployed mass as 4377 kg, but this ignores the 400 kg of EVA transferred materials.
