CASSIOPE

 2013-055A

CSA/Canadian Ministry of Public Work applications satellite mission with MDA/Richmond contractor, the first payload on the upgraded v1.1 version of the Falcon 9 rocket.

F9 v1.1 fairing 13.1 long 5.2 d. The new `octoweb' carried the 9 Merlin 1D engines in a circular configuration instead of the square grid arrangement of the earlier F9 v1.0.

Cassiope (CASCADE Smallsat and Ionospheric Polar Explorer) is prototype of a fleet of LEO Ka-band satellites for transferring large data files. The CASCADE-CX prototype has 2 channels while the operational CASCADE-CP payload has 4. The test satellite also has the ePOP ionospheric research payload. Cassiope uses a Magellan Aerospace/MDA MAC-200 bus (Scisat MAC-100 derivative). Hexagon 1.8m dia 1.2m high.
