DBS 1

 1993-078A

DirecTV, a subsidiary of Hughes HCI, ordered two Hughes HS-601 satellites for Ku-band DTH domestic US television broadcasting. The first DBS satellite was launched in Dec 1993, by which time DirecTV Inc. was a separate Hughes Electronics company and no longer part of HCI. Half of the satellite capacity was sold to US Satellite Broadcasting (USSB). The DBS 1 satellite had a mass of 1270 kg, with 1590 kg of fuel in GTO and 455 kg of fuel at BOL. The bus was 2.3 x 2.3 x 2.6 m in size with a 26.2 m solar panel span.
