TDRS G was carried into orbit aboard Discovery on the first flight with an uprated Block I SSME engine. It was deployed on the first day of the mission. TDRS G was the last of the IUS launched, TRW built satellites.

In May 1995, TDRS 1 was at 85E and being operated via the Canberra DSN station to provide service for GRO. It was due to be replaced by TDRS-3 and be sent to 139W for South Pole relay work. The prime spacecraft were TDRS WEST (TDRS 5) at 174 W and TDRS EAST (TDRS 4) at 41W. TDRS SPARE (TDRS 6) ws the on orbit reserve satellite at 46W. TDRS G was scheduled to go to 171W as a western spare.

DigitalGlobe (Longmont, Colorado) new generation WV-1 0.5-meter-resolution satellite adding to QuickBird. Built by Ball Aerospace with ITT payload for NGA NextView program and launched by Delta II from Vandenberg. BCP-5000 bus. 

Box + 2 panels 3.6 x 2.5m with 7.1m span. Launch mass 2500 kg.

Orbit 496 x 496 km x 97.2. In June 2014 the FCC granted approval for the satellite to shift from a 1030 LTDN SSO to a 1330 LTDN SSO.

STS-89 (Endeavour)

Endeavour made its first space station flight in Jan 1998, Shuttle/Mir-08 (S/MM-08). The ODS and external airlock were in the cargo bay with the Spacehab Double Module; a TCS rendezvous laser was mounted in bay 2P. STS-89 was the first flight with Block IIA SSME engines, with a larger throat chamber and new low pressure turbopumps. Four GAS cans were carried in the aft payload bay.

Endeavour reached orbit and opened the payload bay doors; the experiments in SPACEHAB were then activated. On the second day, the crew filled water bags in preparation for their transfer to Mir. Docking came on day 3.

Thomas was to transfer to the Mir crew on the second docked day, Jan 26. The official transfer was delayed by several hours when his Sokol entry suit did not fit; transfer of the seat liner and checkout on the Sokol suit are both required prior to official crew transfer. Thomas tried on Wolf's suit and that was deemed good enough for him to join the crew; the correct suit was adjusted a couple of days later.

After several days of logistics transfers, it was time for David Wolf to return home. In a farewell press conference there was some controversy about Thomas' poor command of Russian, but Solov'yov defended him. Endeavour undocked minutes after the launch of Soyuz TM-27 from Baykonur, carrying Thomas's presumptive crewmates.

STS-89 brought 630 kg of water to Mir, 422 kg of US science equipment, 1473 kg of Russian logistics material, and 116 kg of miscellaneous cargo for a total of 2011 kg. On the return trip, 762 kg of science equipment were returned together with 308 kg of Russian logistics and 213 kg of miscellaneous cargo for a total of 1283 kg.

The Endeavour crew also carried out the SIMPLEX ionospheric modification thruster firing experiment and the Human Performance experiment.

The Panamsat K4 satellite, named PAS 3R after launch, replaced the cancelled PAS 3 satellite. It was launched in Jan 1996 by Ariane. Mass was 2918 kg full, 1753 kg on station and 1318 kg dry. Size was 2.8 x 3.5 x 3.6m high, 26.5m span.

Starsem dispenser has a mass of 390 kg. Satellites are 450 kg; trapezoidal bus + 2 panels.

One object remained in a 195 x 233 km x 51.9 deg orbit, probably the Soyuz FG third stage.

XTAR-EUR

XTAR's XTAR-EUR is an X-band SS/L 1300 satellite to be stationed at 29E for Spanish military communications. Hisdesat/XTAR is based in Spain and owned by Hispasat, the Spanish Govt, and Loral. The satellite is 3631 kg launch 1412 kg dry, 5.4x 2.8 x 2.2m in size with 31.4m solar panel span. XTAR will be controlled by the Loral network.

Launch by Ariane 5 ECA in 2004 Mar with dummy satellite. XTAR is on an EADS-CASA 1194H payload adapter and a 5.8m Sylda 5C. The medium fairing, with an ACY5400 +2000 cylindrical extension of 2m, is used. Total V521 payload mass is 8297 kg including the two adapters and Sylda (totalling 917 kg extra).

The ECA is 4.71m high 5.46m diameter with mass 19t, including 14.6t of prop. It carries the 950 kg 1.13m high 5.46m diameter VEB (Vehicle Equipment bay).

The EADS/Les Mureaux H173 is 31m long 188.3t full 14.2t empty.

The USA registered XTAR-EUR with the UN, even though ownership is mostly Spanish. Spainsat, launched later, carries the XTAR-LANT payload.
