- eye pupil) was the ASTRO-H mission, originally NEXT (Next X-ray Telescope for JAXA). a followon to Astro-E2 with a hard X-ray imaging telescope and a very long focal length.

Orbit 550 x 550 km x 31 deg. Size 4.5m long, 12m deployed, 2.2m dia. Mass 2700 kg. Launch by H-2A 202 with a 4S fairing.

The three HXT telescopes are 30-60 arcsecond resolution, 750 sq cm area, 8 arcmin field of view, 0.5-80 keV spectral range. The `super-mirror' coating and multilayers allow the hard X-ray imaging. Each HXT has a WXI Wide band X-ray Imager with an SXI CCD array (12 arcmin field of view) and an HXI CdTe detector (6 x 9 arcmin field of view). The single SXT has the SXS microcalorimeter at the focal plane, while the SGD is a Compton telescope for soft gammas.

SXS has 6x6 pixel array 28" pixels, 4 eV res at 3-12 keV in 12 m long spacecraft. Dewar operates at 50 mK.

By mid March the SXS had begun taking data, although not with its full energy range. The results were reported to be scientifically excellent, in preparation for the calibration observation phase due to begin in April. But on Mar 25 disaster struck - at 1910 UTC the satellite started tumbling and then at 0140 UTC Mar 26 the spacecraft partly disintegrated. US tracking found ten debris objects in orbit.

During the next scheduled passes, the first at 0740 UTC, JAXA received only a short burst of telemetry later determined to be from a different satellite. JSPOC reported:

Breakup Notification: SL-12 R/B (SCC# 33472) at approximately 0145z, 27 Mar 16. 21 associated pieces as of 1400z 27 Mar 16. ASTRO H (SCC# 41337) at approximately 0820z, 26 Mar 16. 5 associated pieces as of 1400z 27 Mar 16. The events are not related. All objects have been added to conjunction assessment screenings.

Meteosat 7

Eumetsat/Darmstadt's Meteostat Transition Programme Satellite (MTP, or Meteosat 7) uses the same design as MOP. It is built by Aerospatiale/Cannes and has a launch mass of 689 kg, BOL 490 kg, dry 316 kg. The satellite is a cylinder 2.10m diameter and 3.06m high, spin stabilized.

Radiometer cover ejection gave dV of 0.023 m/s; if radiometer cover is 1 kg, conservation of momentum says it gets an 11 m/s dV and could change its orbit by a few hundred km.

Launch by Ariane in 1997 Sep 2. The satellite was moved to cover the Indian Ocean in 2006 for the IODC (Indian Ocean Data Coverage) mission previously handled by Meteosat-5 and 6. It will be retired in 2017.

GE-2

GE 2 was launched by an Ariane 44L in Jan 1997. It was mounted on a Mini-Spelda above Nahuel 1A , the combined payload of 4900 kg a record for Ariane. The satellite, built at East Windsor, was owned by GE American Communications Inc. Launch mass was 2649 kg, BOL mass 1454 kg, dry mass 1310 kg. The spacecraft was 1.83 x 1.85 x 2.64m in size with a 22m solar panel span and two dish antennae.

Sirius 2

Nordiska Sat. HS-376 high power. NSAB is joint venture of SSC, Tele Danmark and Teracom AB. Will replace Sirius 1. 15 Ku-band tsp. To be built at Hughes/El Segundo. Launch Oct 98 to 5E, colocate with Sirius 1. Lease to SES-Astra at 28E for one year. Then move to 5E for NSAB service.

Launch mass 1420 kg, 815 kg BOL, 630 kg dry. Size 2.16d 3.32m high, 7.76m deployed

Prelaunch plan was for apogee burn at T+58:30 or on Oct 8 at around 0920. At 0851 on Oct 8 according to TLEs, the satellite crossed the equator at 24E and 35869 km altitude. Working back from the Oct 13 TLEs the satellite would have been at 10.7E at that time, but the Oct 17 TLEs match very well for a burn at 0850 UTC. I hypothesize that the Oct 13 TLEs are spurious.

Multifunctional Transport Satellite 1R, replaces MTSAT-1 failure. Loral FS-1300 for Ministry of Transport with met (replacing GMS-5) and aeronautical at L Ku and Ka (for aircraft flight control). MTSAT owned by Civil Aviation Bureau (CAB) of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Japan (MLIT) and the JMA. JMA part is successor to Himawari. Ground stations are at Kobe and Hitachi-Ota. Will be stationed at 140E. MTSAT-1R (was renamed Himawari-6 after launch. Satellite is box + 2 dishes + panel + solar sail boom, mass 3300 kg launch 1300 kg dry. Span across panel and boom is 33.1m. Height is 4.0m.

STS-133 (Discovery)

ULF-5 mission. PMM will go to Unity nadir. ELC4 will go to stbd truss. The LWAPA will be retrieved from COF and go to the SPA. On EVA-1, Kopra and Drew will stow the failed PM on ESP2. perform minor tasks (tool stanchion, APFR relocs, CP3 camera wedge install) and the JAXA 'message in a bottle'.

The MT is then translated from WS2 to WS3; the SSRMS goes from MBS to Harmony. PMM is installed. EVA-2 will vent the old PM, retrieve LWAPA, reconfig CETA, do minor tasks, Install SPDM camera 1 (CLPA 1), remove MLI from ELC4, install lights, covers etc.

EMU 3008 (Kopra, later Bowen?) and 3017 (Drew) up and down.

Launch mass 121844 kg, landing 92866 kg (PK). Launch mass 120370 kg based on early planning data. MECO mass not known - assume 3500 kg less than launch mass? Plan for 66s OMS ASS for 1171 kg prop OMS and 304 kg RCS prop. ( for actual longer duration, further 1922 kg estimated?) OMS 2 assumed 1116 kg for 29.6m/s

Measat 1

The Malaysia/East Asia Satellite (MEASat) was built by Hughes using the HS376 bus, for the Malaysian PTT agency Binariang Sdn. Bhd. 

Measat is 2.2m diameter, 3.31m high at launch and 7.82m high once the solar panel skirt and antennae are deployed. Mass is 1450 kg at launch, 839 kg on orbit and 626 kg dry.

In 2007 Measat was retired from its primary role, moved to 46E and renamed Africasat 1. It was replaced by Africasat-1a in 2013.
